Hate is NOT part of the job

Hate is NOT part of the job

I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Hate Crime (a crime motivated by racial, sexual, or other prejudice), which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey.

Last week was Hate Crime Hate Crime Awareness Week and our officers from across Preston, Chorley, South Ribble and West Lancashire spent time visiting local businesses to help raise awareness of hate crime in the workplace and make sure staff know where to get support if they need it.
Nobody should face abuse, threats or harassment simply for doing their job. Unfortunately, we know that some workers experience hate-related incidents because of their race, religion, disability, sexual orientation or transgender identity.
As part of Operation Hail, our officers visited 311 businesses across South Lancashire, including shops, supermarkets, takeaways, pubs, taxi ranks, schools and healthcare settings.
We spoke with staff, managers and business owners about recognising hate crime, how to report it, and the support available for victims.
We also handed out posters, window stickers and leaflets carrying the message that "Hate is not part of the job", helping businesses show their support for both employees and customers.
If you experience or witness a hate crime, please report it. You can report hate crime directly to us or through one of the third-party reporting centres located across Lancashire.

A hate crime is defined as any criminal offence that is perceived to be motivated by hostility or prejudice, based on disability, race, religion, transgender identity, or sexual orientation. This includes causing harassment, alarm, or distress.

Hate incidents:

Not all behaviour complained of will reach the threshold for being defined as a crime and therefore may be categorised as a non-crime hate incident (NCHI). This means an incident or alleged incident which involves or is alleged to involve an act by a person which is perceived to be motivated - wholly or partly - by hostility or prejudice towards persons with a particular characteristic.

A “particular characteristic”, for the purposes of NCHI recording, means a characteristic that is protected under hate crime legislation:
