Personal Safety - STRANGERS

Good evening,

At approximately 07:20 am on Wednesday 18th December a young school pupil was approached whilst she waited for the bus and offered a lift to school from a stranger. This occurred on Cumeragh Lane at Whittingham near to the Barratts Housing Office. The driver described as female with dark skin and non-local accent was persistent in her approach and questioning and made the school pupil feel vulnerable and anxious. Whilst this might have been an innocent and kind gesture it is also a timely reminder about keeping safe. Talk to your children about strangers and what a safe stranger is. Over the holidays and upon the return to School in 2025 the local policing team will be actively patrolling the rural areas and increasing our presence. If you have any information, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. The police log number is LC-20241218-0524. Below are some simple safety tips.

#TopTip💡

Making sure your property and vehicles are well protected from burglary and theft are important, but keeping yourself safe is a priority! Below details a few ways on how you can keep yourself safe through the darker months by…

🚶‍️ Avoiding short cuts through unlit car parks, alleyways or isolated areas – try and stick to well lit, popular routes.

📍Making someone aware of your location, who you are with and your estimated time of arrival and sharing your location (Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and Find My Friend are a great way to do this).

🚌Preplanning your journeys, especially if using public transport. Pre-booking taxis and having bus/ train times to hand can help.

❌Being aware of strangers offering to help you. Don’t accept lifts and remember that attackers may try to make you feel safe with them so that you will accept a lift or allow them to accompany you.

❗Trusting your instincts. If you feel worried about a person, route or situation try to find a safe way out – change the direction you are walking in, shout help, walk towards a group of people or takeaway or ring the police. If you are wrong, it doesn’t matter. If you are right, it could make all the difference.

If you are concerned for your safety, you can report this by calling 101. Always call 999 if you are in immediate danger.

Take care, and Best Wishes
